I think they should be required to follow guidelines.

I knew someone who was homeschooled - three quarters of his classes were about the Bible. He had a basic science class and a basic math class. He also had trouble getting into local colleges, they refused to recognize his mother's diploma she printed on her home computer (apparently, the state he was from was pretty lax on high school graduation - I won't say where it was).

No because if you do that, it is going to indirectly affect those of us who are not in any way mentally challenged or severely disabled who home schooled purely for the academic and social freedom and opportunity that can only be found outside the heavily structured and overly regulated public school system... those of us who desired a more fulfilling life of learning in the real world, not just the classroom, and who wanted a better education than No Child Left Behind would ever allow for... those of us who are now thriving both socially and academically in the honors programs at top universities or in our careers and adult lives thanks to home education and intend to give the same and more to our own children some day. Do some research. It isn't just religious people who are home schooling these days, nor is it just disabled or mentally challenged people, nor was home schooling intended specifically for either. Home education was there first. Public education came later and simply can't measure up.

My goodness Desiree, you are so full of bitterness. Just because you despise "religion" doesn't mean that you are 1. right 2. have the right to dictate what children are taught.

You talk about "deliberately restricting the knowledge base " but isn't that what the school curriculum does? Schools cant teach children everything so some degree of subjective value laden judgments must be made when deciding the curriculum content

I think that home schooling should be a lot more regulative when you have children being pulled out of school and not learning any thing it's bull crap. I can understand how parents don't want there kids in public schools because of religion, but parents take such advantage of this that we had thousands of kids a year going uneducated.

Religious parents make much better parents than does the government - on any level.

I really don't think you would be happy with government run parenting. Just ask any orphan who grew up in a government sponsored orphanage.

Time does not permit me to go into your prejudice against faith based education. Perhaps the federal government could do something about that?

That is a very good point Desiree and the law should be changed. The same goes for religious schools that brainwash the kids from an early age so that they are never normal.

If I want to home school my children what is it to you? I mean really? What harm does it do you?
