…but many people know popular religious myths quite well? I’m watching the news right now and they’re doing a report on scientific illiteracy amongst Australians. They just said that 1 in 3 Australians believe humans and dinosaurs coexisted. I blame religion for doing this to people. I blame religion for making society ignorant of science because, let’s face it, religion prefers ignorant people than informed people, right? It’s obvious! Ignorant people are easier to manipulate and exploit so religion has a motive to make people ignorant. Do you blame religion for making people ignorant of science?

Most people wouldn't know a neutron from a crouton.
While I agree that religion has certainly made a lot of people ignorant of science, it's not the only source to blame. Most people have been conditioned to not find anything fun or interesting about science. They might "know popular religious myths quite well", but they can also give you the lyrics from some famous pop song, and still not be able to name Newton's Laws of Motion.
Okay I'm Australian and I will say this once 1 in 3 of us DO NOT believe dinosaurs and humans co-existed so that is wrong. But I do agree that religion creates ignorance to science.
I find it sad that a lot of people are ignorant.
Really, science up until 50 years ago believed man and Dinosaur coexisted. If you allow for the average age of a person in Australia and the time it takes science to work it's way into Highschool textbooks it's perfectly reasonable average.
almost each Christian I knew accepts sciences. I actuality, I carry a pair of technology levels. Many Christians have long previous into sciences which includes drugs because of the fact they desire to help the international. Many Christians are additionally instructors (which comprise technology) for the comparable reason. the place Christians have an argument is while technology is misused to aim to disprove faith. case in point, "evolution exhibits there's no author." fake assertion. Evolution is an attempt to describe (appropriate or incorrect) which there are countless species. Has not something to do with the question of foundation (how existence began) or no remember if or not there's a author. all and sundry who thinks that the Christian faith is "anti-technology" is unfamiliar with the Christian faith.
"I blame religion for making society ignorant of science because, let’s face it, religion prefers ignorant people than informed people, right?"
Wrong. As I pointed out in answer to another question today, in secular Britain, faith based schools have parents queuing out of their doors, trying to get their kids in. They do that because of the high academic standards those schools have a reputation for.
A well known phenomenon is for parents to suddenly develop an interest in religion, about six months before their kids are due to move to another school, and they start going to church. They do it in the hopes of getting a reference from the priest, to help get their kids into an Anglican or Catholic school.
Science has spent the last 4000 years (Sumeria) attempting to explain HOW the universe functions and the saddest part about this story is that it doesn't matter how. The more important question is WHY. This is the importance of theology (the science of divine scripture).
"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." 2 Timothy 2:15
Yes.
But, to be fair, a lot of society makes me sad besides that.
The whole R&D budget for the UK is dwarfed by the amount of money that is tied up in football ...
Also, things like Live aid are hosted by celebrities, who between them, could easily raise more than the amount of money that is raised from the public and STILL have 6 figure incomes every year for themselves.
It is partially religion. But it is other sources as well, depending on what culture you live in. In America, other aspects include a rising trend of anti-intellectualism and distrust of science in general. Americans are too busy slapping a label on everyone, and scientists (and any student who may be good at science) is labeled "nerd".
Religion certainly doesn't do us any favors though.
What most people call "science" is really the results of science. It's more important for people to understand scientific methods and techniques than to simply know the results.
Science is the study of the observed. Too many theories are being accepted, and not true science. And if you didn't know that you are the novice not me. Examples-Higgs Boson, hahahaha. String Theory, hahahaha. Dark matter, hahahahaha. Darwinian Evolution, hahahahahahahaha!!! Heisenburg Theory, hahahaa.
I have studied university science for 15 solid years. Believe me you will only end up with a blank. Now "science" is having to revamp their whole view of the universe, and admit that everything we think we know about it is wrong. If you dont believe me, then get off your*** and go buy "The Wormhole" narrated by Morgan Freeman. Better yer yet just stay on your atheist duff. Because all you have to do is ask one simple question to any pseudo-scientist. What caused the "big bang" ? All you will get is DUUUUUUHHHHHHHHH!
Science is the study of the OBSERVED. Not UNOBSERVED. What is unobserved is theory only. Not science.
If you didnt know that was the definition of science then those thumbs have obviously been somewhere else your whole life before it appeared on Yahoo Answers.
