Can you get to the truth about religion studying it from an atheist’s perspective?
Or do you have to have preconceived beliefs about an invisible god, a book of Bronze Age myths and bizarre afterlife scenario before you can get to the truth?
An atheist, by definition, believes that no God exists. Most atheists believe that you should only believe in things that you can prove logically. Religion is man's attempt to describe God. Since the atheist has already assumed that there is no God, they will come to the conclusion that there is no God. But, assuming the conclusion violates the tenets of logic. In order to arrive at a logical conclusion about the nature of God, you must allow the possibility that God exists. Once you assume that God is a possibility, you leave the realm of atheism and enter agnosticism. Here, a valid description of God is possible, but unlikely. After all, there is very little that we learn on our own in isolation from all previous knowledge and other people. In general, such findings are in the area of self-awareness, not external matters (such as God).
Do you need preconceived beliefs? No. And, the atheist's perspective is full of them.
Doesn't atheism preclude the truth about religion? I'm sorry, I just don't see how the the absence of belief would ever help one to more fully believe.
A witness of God's truth can come only in & through His Holy Spirit - anything that would proceed from the mouth or understanding of a nonbeliever would be pointless and carry NO spirit of truth. Intention and where the heart is are key for receiving eternal truths in my opinion.
It is pointless to try to get to the truth from a subjective perspective. If you already believe it to be true, it is pointless to try to get to the truth.
The only way to get to the truth is from an objective perspective.
Study the borg, without becoming one, to understand how evil the borg may be. Studying the borg, while being a borg is pointless.

My advice to you is to ask these brothers and sisters that are at your Atheist temple what they believe.
It is obvious what your affiliation is Atheism or is it Islamic.
Hard to divide the two,

agree with James. studying religion from an atheistic's perspective isn't the same as learning about religion in a theist's fashion
Atheism is just as "Bronze Age" as anything else that--like itself--has existed since the "Bronze Age".
No, read "Atheist Delusions" by David Bentley Hart, to understand.
you could get to many truths relating to religion by looking at it from an atheists perspective
The only to get the truth is to admit that there is no god.
