A lot of them do have ‘sob-stories.’ They usually involve the death of a family member or a traumatic experience and after this, they started believing wholeheartedly in some religious nonsense. Do you think it’s cruel to challenge these people about their beliefs? Do you think it’s cruel to point out to these people that it’s highly likely that the traumatic experience has upset a balance in their mind, that was probably never really that balanced anyway, and this is what lead them to believe wholeheartedly in a bunch of absurd myths and superstitious nonsense?

"Atheists: do you show mercy to religious people with ‘sob-stories’?"
Not in teh least.
Ultimately they show how weak, mentally-unstable and generally needy they are.
Yuk !
I am not a needy, whiny little coward who needs to hold teh imaginary hand of a geographically specific-dependent invisible space chappie.
I like life raw, sans condiments, sans accoutrements.

It depends on the situation.
If it's a friend of family member - yes.
If it's a random stranger trying to convince me god is real - no. I've even known those who admit to have lied about their supposed experiences thinking it would convince me more. Usually I point out that people get through trauma with no god involved all the time - and I do the same.
If it's a random stranger on the internet - rarely. I find most of those types are just doing it for the attention. Or if they are doing it to convince me god is real - same as above.
i show empathy to anyone who's lost a loved one. It hurts like hell.
Along with empathy I try and show kindness - so that negates any
silly notion to be cruel, heartless, mean and evil.
You might want to check your own scales in the matter of balance... [g]
Well in these case when you say to these people there is no God what they here subconsciously is - let your loved one die, he's gone. That is insulting to them i guess. I don't try to attack people that aren't asking for it, if they are asking for it then debate time it is, yes!
Yes, it IS cruel.
However, I still think we should do it. Just because hitting someone with the truth seems mean, doesn't make it any less truthful.
I show mercy to anyone with a sob story.
Tough love from Desi!!!
Nope.
Everyone has their tragedies. Why should theirs be treated any differently.
Dude, that's not cool
Do you get some kind of sick pleasure out of asking these questions about religious people?
