You won't get a good cycle of any sort for that price, especially one that will be safe to use off road.
Forget Halfords, they are a car accessory company that also sells cycles.
Get along to your local cycle store, if Evans is local they have a good range, and see what they have.
To get anything remotely good you'll have to at least double your budget though, a reasonable entry level mountain bike would start at about £400 to £500.
A Giant is most likely the best but go in to a bike shop to find out more and have a test ride. I have a Giant as well its really good for off roading because of the weal's but its not going to be £100-200 more like £500-700 but you really do get your money worth from it. No mountain bike would be good if its £100-200 your going to get a kid bike for that. Maybe have a look at this not a bad price...
If you don't mind getting last year's model, and you don't mind going up a notch, you can get Raleigh AT10 Mens 20" Front Suspension All Terrain Bike on Amazon for less than £250 http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004NT5A4K/?tag=myyahoo...
I have a friend using the fully suspended Apollo Outrider from Halfords, and he says that he's never been more comfortable on any of his bikes as on this one (though his other bikes cost way more).

If you'd change your mind, this is a great and very reliable mountain bike: http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/bo...
There are none in that price range - period. The "good" ones will start in the £325 range & up.
