Because the Spanish territories in the Americas were not colonies but provinces of Spain.
Spaniards from Cuba were legally as spanish as Spaniards from Madrid.
One of the reason for the independence movement in Puerto Rico and Cuba was because of the abolition of slavery. Pro-slavery people there were against these laws because it was against their interests, that's why the Cuban and PuertoRican high class supported independence.
Because it made them a lot of money.
Same reason the Southern States wanted to keep it.
