Timmy riddle was selling toffee apples at the school fete. When I asked him what they cost he said "One toffee apple costs the smallest amount that cannot be paid exactly using four or fewer standard British coins".
I bought as many toffee apples as I could get for £1. How much change did I receive?

British coins are 1p, 2p, 5p,10p, 20p, 50p, 1 pound and 2 pounds.
(This assumes that "crowns", value 25p, are not classed as "standard" British coins. They ARE legal tender but tend to be used for commemorative purposes rather than daily use.)
The smallest amount that you need 5 or more coins for is 38p ie 20p + 10p +5p +2p +1p
Therefore you bought 2 toffee apples costing 2 x 38p = 76p
You therefore received 100p -76p = 24p change.
