You are sick for about a week with the flu, take another week to recover enough to function fully in your normal life, and a cough can last for weeks after that. As long as you do not have chest pains or difficulty breathing freely,do not have uncontrollable coughing fits that make it hard to breathe because you are coughing too hard, do not have a fever or feel the need to sleep all the time, you are probably fine.
But if you have any doubt, go see your doctor. Better to play it safe.
A lingering cough is quite common after you've been sick. Your body is still trying to get all the nasty crap out. You can start taking hotter showers, take Mucinex, or put your head over a steaming pot of water to get the rest out.
If you notice more mucus, dry, hacking, rattling, or changes in color, you need to go back to your doctor and get checked out. Your flu could have developed into something else and settled in your lungs.

Happened to me and many I know. It did pass, but it seemed to take forever.
This is normal.
