Multiply both sides by 2 which cancels the 2 under the fraction:
4x + 8 = -20
Then subtract 8 from both sides, and divide by 4
4x = -28
x = -7

So it's really 4x + 4 = 10
Subtract 4 from both sides, so it's 4x = -14
Then divide both sides by 4. (-14/4)
x= -3.5

step 2 -moving 4 to RHS by changing sign becomes 4x = -10 -4 which become 4x=-14;
step 3 - therefor x = -14/4 which equals x=-3.5
