Shannon’s mini-van travels 30 mph faster than Chris’ Harley. In the same time it takes Chris to travel 75 mile?
Distance / Speed / Time. The formula d = rt is used to measure distance (d) which is equal to rate (r) times time (t).
Use this formula to set up and solve the following problem.
Shannon’s mini-van travels 30 mph faster than Chris’ Harley. In the same time it takes Chris to travel 75 miles, Shannon travels 120 miles.

Let Chris speed be x mph
Shannon's speed = ( x+30) mph
Time taken = distance / speed = 75 / x = 120 / ( x+30)
CROSS MULTIPLY
120x = 75x + 75*30
45x = 75*30
x = 75*30 /45 = 75 X 2/3 = 50mph
ANSWER Chris = 50 mph Shannon = 80 mph
CHECK
75/50 = 1.5 hours
120/80 = 1.5 hours
Either a high-speed minivan or a very slow Harley....
Let the Harley speed be h MPH. The minivan speed, m is h + 30
Time for Chris to travel 75 miles = 75/h hours
Time for Shannon to travel 120miles = 120/(h +30)
75/h = 120/(h + 30)
75(h + 30) = 120h Divide across by 5 to simplify
15h + 450 = 24h
450 = 9h
h = 50 MPH
m = 80 MPH.....My, does Shannon have a lead foot or what?
