If you want to lighten your hair more then a few shades then you may have to use bleach. After you bleach it you can dye your hair any colour you want.

Usually you lighten your hair before dyeing it. If you're not supposed to the dye and developer you have together then you could get a result that you don't want.

My hair dresser says no, but she did it herself! I asked her to correct a dark stroke in my hair. She let a light color work into it. Then dyed all the hair in one medium brown shade (also my natural color) and it's perfect. Don't waste money doing it yourself.

So this is actually a thing but the formula can be tricky. I would suggest a high-lift dye. L’Oréal hicolor hilights maybe?

Depends what colour your hair is now and all permanent hair dyes do have a small amount of bleach in it, even if you were going dark brown but to lighten it you will need to bleach it first then use a toner to exact colour as I have been dying my hair for a long time or else it would be white. Without using bleach you might be able to lighten your hair one level lighter than it is, if you were naturally dark brown you could use a dark blonde colour and it would be slightly lighter. If you are not used to dying your hair I would go to hairdresser to get it done. Good Luck
