Republicans in the Senate voted today against measures that would have provided tax cut extensions for the middle class but not for the wealthiest Americans.
Senator Schumer introduced a measure that would have extended the tax cuts for everyone with incomes of less than $1 million. Senate Republicans voted against that also.
Maybe the Republicans are just holding the middle class tax cuts hostage until they get their way, which is to protect the interests of the wealthy.
Update:Republicans could vote for the middle class tax cut extensions and then later vote on tax cut extensions for the wealthiest Americans. (It should be even easier to get the tax cuts for the rich when they take over the House in January.)
Why not consider the measures for the tax cut extensions for the middle class (primarily) separately from that of tax cuts for the richest? What is the problem -- really?

That's what they are saying so you know who 's interest they care about. No tax cut for middle class and no unemployment extension for people who are out of work through no fault of their own. As far as I'm concerned they are heartless
LOL, with the same tired old saw that the wealthy fund the recovery with investments.
WHY should the wealthy invest here in the US businesses at 6% when they can put it on credit card funding at 15%? Or on foreign soil at much more than 6%?
It just doesn't work the way the ivory-tower Republicans say it works. If they are not in ivory towers, then they are poart of a conspiracy or they are incurable stupid. It is obvious to nearly everyone that there are only isolated cases of "trickle down" these days.
Next time I go to vote, I want to know who contributed the most to jobs. If the jobs have not recovered, then I will punish the party in power, and I don't care who it is.
Maybe the dems are holding the upper-middle class tax cuts hostage. Maybe it's politically advantageous for the Reps to allow these to expire and instead pass new legislation in the next Congress that would permanently lower income taxes for everyone. That puts the dem Senate and Obama in the position of having to vote/veto it down.
Because you give the devil an inch... you know the adage.
The wealthiest Americans is 1% or 2% of the population. You could take every penny they have and it wouldn't put a drop in the bucket in comparison to our debt.
We all remember Clinton. And we remember the taxes we paid under him. But, he was just going to tax the wealthy, of course. Even those who escape the income tax will be paying more in all the other taxes that come out of their paycheck.
And, we know that all that money, from raising taxes, will simply sit in Washington until the government decides how they want to spend it. The poor, the disabled, will not see a penny. Nor will we.
Republican politicians care about the rich, they don't care as much for the middle class, they despise the poor. Republican voters are too stupid or too blind or too racist to figure that out...considering that many of the most vocal Republican voters are poor white trash themselves.
Yes that is exactly what they are saying.
They are saying if the rich that don't need them and foreign investors don't get to keep tax cuts then nobody does.
In Our market the economy moves by the "wealthy people" Interests of the wealthy is the interests of economy.
when was the last time someone poor improved your finances or gave you a job? The Rich deserve their money just like you deserve yours. Put the kool aid down and try loving America for a change.
They are telling the dems to put up or shut up. Asking them if they care more about screwing the rich than about having everyone else's taxes raised.
I like when they protect the interests of the wealthy. The wealthy built America.
