I'm doing Pre-algebra homework and the question is (find x). the key says it's the answer is 4/3 but i don' understand how they got there. my answer was 4 2/3. can u explain it please I have a quiz tommorow.

Your answer is CORRECT ie 4 and 2/3
If you do any operation to one side you must always do the same operation to the other side if the equation is still to hold true. Therefore,
Add 5 to both sides
3x = 14
Divide both sides by 3
x = 14/3
x = 4 and 2/3
HOWEVER I think I know what the mistake in the book is!
3x + 5 = 9 gives the answer x = 4/3
3x + 5 = 9
Subtract 5 from each side
3x = 4
x = 4/3
I think 3x - 5 = 9 was intended to be 3x + 5 = 9
EITHER that OR there is a simple misprint and the answer 14/3 was given as 4/3. Whatever it is, rest assured that you answered the question that was quoted, correctly.
