Because it pushes the pain onto others. That's like half of the reason to not do it. Makes it really hard, even though the pain you pass on won't be nearly as bad as what you suffer every day of your life even in "happy" times.
Suicide is a violent thing. It is murder, first of all, shocking and frightening to everyone, and it it a massive dump of one's problems, which don't just disappear into the air. It affects everyone close to them in a terrible way. A better solution is for the person suffering to try to get the help needed to recover.
Suicide is preventable and getting the proper help can prevent it. It causes massive pain and suffering to the family and friends of the person. Imagine being a mother and your child whom you carried and spent your life loving and raising destroys themselves. Imagine that pain. It’s the most disrespectful thing imaginable.
Selfishness is the defining characteristic of life anyways so it doesn't matter one way or the other. The people saying suicide is selfish are clamouring over each other to get their next girlfriend while they're saying it. And what about the people demanding you should continue suffering so they don't have to feel guilty? It's all crap. A bunch of shallow, small-minded humans trying to protect themselves from their deep inner fears.
I think what people are trying to get at if someone who takes their own life is negatively affecting more people than themselves without those people having a choice in the matter. So for the greater good they should not do it.
I don't think suicide is selfish. I think that people have their inner struggles and no one can judge them for what they chose to do with their own life as long as you arn't harming someone else in the process. So if you decide to kill yourself by running in front of a train you are being selfish because you are damaging the train conductor and forcing people into your plan that don't want to be.

Simple answer: suicide is a terrible, painful, traumatic burden to leave on the people who care about the deceased.
