In most cases there similar, dango is small rice flour balls, that are cooked and then glazed with a sweet soya based sauce after a light grilling, mochi is a sweet, along with daifuku they can have any number of fillings, mochi tend to be thicker and not as filled as daifuku, mochi can be filled and frozen inside ice cream balls, I worked in japan in the 1980's at a Canadian based Hotel, we have a sweet maker and up the street in my neighbourhood we had one to, dango is a bar snack for the sake crowd after work, it can be flavoured with green tea, umeboshi, wild yam or other flavourings rolled into small balls, poached in salt water, then skewered grilled to toast them and then a sauce similar to tonkatsu is brushed on.
