By cutting government spending or by filling our tax coffers by having a high percentage of people employed?
Update:@Shyshark: I agree, no one should be entitled to cheap imports at the expense of their fellow Americans jobs.
Update 3:@Cal rang: Not to mention China manipulating their currency.

Stop spending more that we have. Stop loaning huge amounts of money to countries that still owe us money. Take care of home 'before' you help your neighbor.
Cost cutting should begin at the top. In Government
Every elected official should take a 20% salary cut and also pay more from their pockets for medical benefits. They should buy their own gas and pay for all their transportation (when they take their family on "fact finding tours" ) after all they were elected to office not their families.
At this time the government needs to spend more money to stimulate the economy. Currently individuals are not spending money because they are either unemploye, underemployed or afraid that they will be. Businesses are not spending money because of the low demand caused by individuals not spending. We cannot change this, we cannot make people or businesses spend money to stimulate the economy. Only the govt can spend money and they had better do so if we do not want an even deeper recession that goes on for decades more. Government must spend money. Our infrastructure is falling apart and becoming obsolete. Win win. Govt spends money on infrastructure with is desperately needed. This generates strong employment, people spend money businesses spend money to meet the increased demand and they hire more people and we pay down the debt.
This is not only the better way, it is the only way. Cutting govt spending will deepen the recession and make it last so long that this whole generation of young people will have no jobs. It will also weaken the safety net for our people just when it is needed most. This truly is a no brainer if you actually think about it.
The debt will never be paid. 15 trillion, plus interest accruing. There is no way. And in fact, those in power know it can never be paid back. Rather, the national debt is a tool used to keep the Federal Reserve in power over us. The only thing that can be done to get out of this mess I can see is to 1. Tell the Federal Reserve boys to get the hell out, and 2. negotiate with other countries who we may owe money to, like China directly without us getting in debt first and then China buying debt, and so forth. The Federal Reserve and the reserve banking system is the problem. The national debt is just what people notice
Start by NOT electing anymore Republican presidents.
The last 3 Republican presidents have contributed to over 50% of the total national debt alone.
Before Ronald Reagan was elected president, the national debt was a measly $3 trillion ( ! ! ! )
George Bush Jr. had pushed it up an additional $4.5 trillion just in his two terms !
So I guess there's a downside to giving all those tax breaks and starting a couple of wars.
We need to have low unemployment and we also need to fix the entitlement programs to cut spending. We are so far away from having a surplus that we can use to pay off debt it is not funny.
We have to do a combination of things.
Ultimately we have to bring in more than we spend, and cutting out $1 trillion will be necessary because we can't increase taxes that much even with a larger pie of working population.
The biggest part of our debt is: Social Security, Medicare, and Interest on the Debt. Military spending is below those three. Address those things and we'll see some changes.
The best way will be to cut spending on entitlements, and force a budget in congress every fiscal year. If you cut welfare fraud, pork barrel spending, limiting government and enhancing the tax payer base, America will be on the fast track to prosperity.

Why pay down the national debt? We need deficits to get ourselves out of the economic depression.
