The vast majority of medals are awarded to people that are still living.
I've personally gotten about 10 separate decorations, and none of them were awarded posthumously (as evidenced by the fact that nothing paranormal was involved in typing this answer).

medals are not always awarded posthumously. We have living Medal of Honor winners, for example.
