I think your asking for the 4th root of x^8. Since x^8=(x^4)^2 when you take the 4th root you just have x^2 left.
Another way to see it is as this is you are taking the square root its equivalent to saying x^(1/2) cube root is x^(1/3) and 4th root is x^(1/4).
So this becomes (x^8)^(1/4) and since we know that (x^a)^b=x^(a*b), thus we have x^(8*1/4)=x^2.
