It was nationalism that drove Hitler towards eradicating Jews, and it was also nationalism that allowed the Vietnamese people to survive a good 200 years of imperial war. So it can be used in good ways and bad ways. The way I see it, nationalism is a good philosophy for banding people together in times of crisis.
But it is so easily abused and profligated that I'm weary of nationalistic figures. I think humanitarianism is a much more healthy philosophy to adopt.
Its really good but I feel some people love this country a little too much. Its good to have a strong sense of nationalism but a strong sense of patriotism is too much. People like many rednecks and conservatives and mostly everybody with a truck or lives in the south. It blows my mind how much they love America! Every time they see an American flag they get sooooo freaking excited! This country is pretty awesome but its FAR from prefect. They have so many crazy ideas like if a flag touches the ground they have to burn it(WTF?!), we have to pray for our president, and many more stupid and crazy ideas and practices.
I love how some people believe that putting up American flags is like the greatest thing to do for this country. ITS NOT!
Paying taxes, voting, supporting the economy, investing, not dropping out of High School or college, writng to people in DC does a lot more than waving American flags and saying the Pledge.
Nationalism is political theory in which revolutionaries feel their own country superior to other. I think nationalism is quiet good for any politician for change their mindset so he can change our country's economic and social condition. Extreme nationalism is harmful for country. We can use this only for country's progress.
E.g Adolf Hitler made his country powerful with the feeling of Nationalism but extreme nationalism destroyed Germany as result of WW2. This was also applicable to japan. So,Japan got destroyed by America.
Nations are artificial creations, arbitrary parts of the earth's surface where one band of thieves and murderers have said 'This bit is ours, everyone who lives here has to go along with what we say and, when called on, fight and kill for us in wars'.
Nationalism implies that everyone who lives in a country has the same interests, which is wrong. The interests of the 99% are not the same as those of the 1%.
They are not "leftists" or socialists as the right ridiculously claim, other than sham socialism to fool the masses.
Nationalism believes in country first, always, which isn't always a bad thing but they easily become beligerent and start invading other countries, ect causing huge bloody wars.
We need nation states. Global government would be a disaster. The larger the entity the more power is consolidated. With global government, it would be the only game in town and soon, the state would be all powerful with nothing to counter it.

i prefer patriotism over nationalism.
If you mean preserving one's culture, racial heritage, or religion by choice, then it is fine. Nothing wrong with preservation in itself.
But if you mean using it to impede on others, then it is bad.
its good america could do with some nationalism
What type? Primordialist or Modernist?
