this is something of a joke. It is called the 'great' purge because it was on a more substantive scale than his daily mass murders of citizens in general, those who may have committed crimes, as well as those he would simply authorize to murder so as to scare the daylights out of the population. anyway, the purge in question decimated the officer ranks in the soviet military. the 1930's were a horrible decade for the entire world, Russians suffered more than most, starvation, enforced slave labor practices, living in cardboard shacks, and subject to indiscriminate murder. what's not to like!?
back to the great purge. it is believed that Hitler's initial success against the USSR in WW2 was due to relative inexperience of those in the military who came up after the purge. on the other hand, Stalin couldn't afford to suffer a military coup in the 30's so for him, it was a trade-off he had to gamble on. But in the end, he wasn't going to starve or die so why should he care about the path he took from disaster to victory?
Zhukov survived the purge, turned out to be a brilliant tank commander, the T-34 was a durable tank, and the rest is history. In the final analysis, the purge cost Stalin nothing, and saved his dictatorship from likely death. Good ole Uncle Joe!
definitely D).
