so set it up
5x^2y^3 23x^5y
_______÷ _______
3a^5b^4 42^a7b^3
to divide this you need to flip the one on the right and make it into muliplication
this is what it will look like now....
**Note: You can also simply criss cross on the original setup above to multipy but I thought this other method would be easier for you to see)
5x^2y^3 42^a7b^3
_______x _______
3a^5b^4 23x^5y
now you across multiply..it will be like this
(5x^2y^3)(42^a7b^3)
_______________
(3a^5b^4)(23x^5y )
now multiply 5x42 and just add the a b x y with their exponents in order do the same to the bottom
you should get
210 a^7 b^3 x^2 y^2
______________
69 a^5 b^4 x^5 y
now you have to simplify find the LCD (least common denominator) which in this case is 3 a^5 b^3 x^2 y
so divide 3 into 210 and 69...when you divide exponents you subtract and keep it where the highest exponent is. so if we do this we get
70 a^2 y^2
________
23 b x^3
That will be the answer because there is no longer an LCD because no common numbers can be divided into it. Its already as simplify as it can be.
