I have a lancer with 57k miles. runs perfectly.. well maintained.

Today — when starting it up, it didn't want to turn over. It finally did. When it did turn over there was some white smoke out the exhaust but quickly went away (maybe just a coincidence) There was a clicking sound along with this in the engine.

Later, I took it to the shop. When I started it up again, it started up right away, no smoke but a little noise. At the shop everything went away.

The result. they said the starter was going out. $460. I drove my car home without the repair and it drove and sounded fine.

It MIGHT need a starter. I don't know. What's the normal cost?
