I wonder how many of us record our favourite tv progs and watch them later primarily to avoid the relentless pressure from advertising?
I have the Sky+HD box and I thank goodness for it as I can watch my programme without constant interruptions from four minute breaks every fifteen minutes.
Before I had the box I used to 'channel hop' in an effort to spare myself from the monotony of pushy, cheesy ads.
How about you, perhaps you like the ads please share your thoughts here?

Like you, I have a Sky+HD box. I do record quite a lot and watch them later. I always fast forward at the adverts. Even when watching a programme 'live', at the adverts I flick through the channels before going back to the 'live' programme. The only thing is they seem to show adverts at the same time on the other channels too. There is no getting away from them lol.
The tv adds are very silly here in Hungary but the nice thing is that they only have commercial times between shows and once or twice in a long movie.
before the adds come on it says, Reklem, meaning commercial break time.
At least you know you have a good 5 to 10 mins. to make some tea or grab a snack without missing any of the show.
Most times I watch Netflix with my laptop, no adds there.I watch the CW tv once a week to catch up on my Vampire Diaries, but the adds don't bother me much, sort of reminds me of the US when I see them.I almost feel like I am back home in the states when I see a commercial for trash bags or mobile service.
Funny thing here is many of the adds are in the Slovakian language, guess the main station for some channels is located in Slovakia. I can watch a show in English and all the adds are in either Hungarian or Slovakian, so strange. Thing is they use the same "brainwashing" formula in their add like advertisers use in the US.
They think people are so dumb all over the world.
My son gets really angry as he pays a small fortune in Las Vegas for his cable channels, he wonders why he has to pay so much and still suffer through adds.
I'm afraid I'm quite a fanatic about T.V. adverts - I truly detest them, so much so that I actually watch all the programmes with the remote beside me all the time, and the moment an ad. comes on, I hit the mute button..!
I think this is linked to the fact that my first T.V. watching experiences were in the U.K. and back in the day, it was only Aunty BBC and no other competition. So we grew up on an ad-free service. Commercial T.V. only really took hold after I had left the country. And arriving here, it was much the same as in the U.K. but a bit more primitive. National T.V. for a few hours every day and shut-down at 11.p.m.
Recently, I did a house renovation and decided to splash out and upgrade my T.V. and computer screen. The T.V. is a 32'.inch LG.HD. with the appropriate number of pixels and channels and it's a beauty. The definition is amazing and the colours out of this world. I'm a huge snooker fan and that wide, wide screen and the table spread out like a wide lawn, awesome..! I love it. It wasn't expensive either - NS.1028 Shekels or $267 dollars, on sale at Best Buy.
I find the most irksome programmes are the one that truly don't need adverts, such as National Geographic and the History Channel. I mean, why do they have to advertise themselves every 15 minutes.. It's not even commercial ads, its 'Watch National Geographic, Blah, Blah Blah,' and the same on the History Channel. Four times in an hour's programme they scream at you, 'At 6.p.m. tonight WE HAVE A PROGRAMME ON RARE BUTTERFLIES..! DON'T MISS IT..!' Yeah, right..!
We do tape many of our favorites and when we watch them, we fast forward through the advertisements. I wonder if sky+HD is available here in the US? We have satellite TV, but even the extra channels we pay for have many ads.
There are some ads that are pretty funny and I like those, especially the etrade one with the talking babies. So cute!
I hate the ads for sexual products because some times my grandkids are here. They do not need to know about the meds that will let a guy have an erection, then say if it lasts more than four hours, see your Dr.
I usually just record the good stuff, which is rare these days,
and watch it later, so as to avoid the ads.
Things like Downton Abbey and World without End, all seem
to draw lots of adverts and there are only so many times that
one can put the kettle on, or visit the bathroom.
I have a Hard Disc Drive and tend to save recordings for those
nights when there is little of interest being broadcast, which seems
to be most of the time these days.
I am aware that some shows rely on adverts for sponsorhip, but
even that does not mean I have to watch them, I hate adverts.
Very seldom watch adverts - do others remember when there were just 2 interruptions in a 30 minute program . . . and each break contained no more than 1 60 second and 2 30 second commercials? I watched those - but not the barrage we get now: for the heck of it I sat through one break recently: 14 commercials in a row! Unfortunately, younger generations grew-up with the intrusions and have been conditioned - just as the advertisers want.
I channel surf......or record the few programs I follow regularly.
I do the same as you. It saves so much time and aggravation!
When I watch a live broadcast with advertisements, I read through them until I either sense that the programme is starting again or the family helpfully yell: "It's on again!"
There was once an ad for which I used to break my rule to watch it with pleasure, but on the other side of the Atlantic, where a company called J.G. Wentworth advertised by singing operatically about its products. It was so well down that I couldn't resist joining in. I could, however, resist the product!
As everyone, I have the option too and skip tv entirely... part of that is that I am afraid i will leave a news channel on all day and that will be the background music of my life - - the other is the adverts...
A few years ago, I saw a history channel show in a hotel room. They showed abt 10 minutes of program, 5 minutes of advs - came back and showed 5 minutes of recapping the first part then 2 minutes new then 5 minutes of adverts... I don't htink they had more than 20 minutes of show for an hours viewing...
I don't watch most of them (probably because my husband mutes them so quickly) but I love the Kia Soul ad with those cute little hamsters breakdancing and just having a great time. But my favorite commercial of all time was one of an older fellow picking up an older lady and when they got in the car it was like they were in their 20s, I think it was a Chevy commercial sometime last year. The funny thing is that I re-watched that commercial several times on TV and on the Internet and can't say for sure what car was being advertised now.
I have a love/hate thing with adverts, Lily.
Some of them are quite innovative or amusing - but I must admit it seems to me 'authorities' don't nowadays appear to be monitoring total times of ads per 60 minutes. I thought we had limits in the UK but some go on for more than 5 minutes.
The extended (40 minute) versions of say HIGNFY and QI repeated on DAVE take an hour - which indicates 20 minutes of ads which I thought was not allowed.
On the positive side these long breaks give ample time to make tea/check cooking etc without missing a critical bit of film dialogue, etc.
I don't have a thingummy to record stuff - I'd probably mess it up if I did - but rely on iplayer and/or the simple fact so many programmes are repeated these days one gets round to watching them at some stage. Midsomer Murders, Lewis, Poirot and Marple seem to be on continuously these days.
With my rapidly faulty remembery, I watch them often - having completely forgotten who dunnit.
