Does Trump automatically become the republican nominee in 2020 if he doesn’t get impeached?
I’m a republican that doesn’t like trump and I’m sure he has almost no shot at winning the next one, which concerns me, because if he’s the republican nominee that will mean the democrat would automatically win.
Would he automatically be the nominee? And if it isn’t automatic, do you think it would likely or unlikely that the Republican Party would endorse a different candidate? I guess a third option would be someone running for libertarian possibly standing a chance.

In general a sitting president is essentially automatically renominated. However, there has been challenges to sitting presidents. Ronald Reagan challenge Jerry Ford in 1976, Ted Kennedy challenged Jimmy Carter in 1980 and Pat Buchanan challenged George Bush senior in 1992. However, all of these attempts failed. The last time sitting president was not renominated by their party was in 1968 when LBJ declined to seek reelection. I think we have to go back to before the Civil War to find a case where a sitting president decided to run again but was not renominated by their party
Technically, it's not automatic, but it's pretty likely. The last President who wasn't nominated for a second term was Kennedy -- and that's because he was dead when it was time to pick a nominee. The last time that a President lived long enough to be nominated for a second term but the party picked someone else was over 120 years ago.

Incumbents usually have the support of their party. Others can challenge them, but if they are seen to have a good chance of being re-elected, it's unlikely the nomination would go to anyone else. There's still the primary system, and voters can vote for another candidate, if there is one. It's hard to say about Trump right now. If Republicans lose big in the midterms, they may be more reluctant to back him for a second term.
