six months is the standard authorization. but the officer can give less, if he wants. you can apply to extend your stay in the US through USCIS, but if you do, chances are you'll have a tough time coming back the next time, especially if you try to return shortly after you leave..
A tourist visa is for visiting only. It does not give you the right to live and work in the US. You can apply for an extension, but it is unlikely that you will get one, so plan on leaving the US within six months of your arrival.
A multiple-entry tourist/business visa is for repeated periodic trips to the country for visits ONLY! You cannot remain. Maximum of 180 days in the country in any one-year period. You must be "out" at least as long as you were "in." NO extensions. When you enter, your I-94 form is stamped with the date by which you must depart, which may be up to 180 days from date of entry. No exceptions, no excuses, no extensions. If you fail to depart on time, you become subject to deportation, revocation of visa, and bar to reentry. If it appears you applied for multi-entry when you intended to remain, that's visa fraud, which can get you permanently barred from reentry.
Visit briefly and return home! You can visit again next year.
I have 2 U.S. visa B1OCS and C1D. I used my visa since 2004 and it's valid until the expiration date. What I secure is a guarantee letter from my company. They just gave me a period of stay in my passport. After that I have to go home and enter U.S. again.
