I live with a lot of regrets and past mistakes. Stuff I can not talk about or want to think about. It seems to always come back to me. I want to ask god for forgiveness, but I do not believe he will. I feel like my sin is too bad and shameful. I have managed to live with my past regrets but they still bother me? Can god really forgive a sinner like me?

I've listened to a lot of Christian's testimonies, and the vast majority of their 'sins' were so minor, that it was hard to listen to them talk about how they felt like they 'couldn't be forgiven' without laughing.
They had been taught since before they knew what they were being told that they were 'sinners' and that without 'god' they are 'dirty rags' undeserving of anything but punishment, pain, and suffering.
Even the ones who had misdeeds that rose to a level that might require them to take some kind of decisive action to be able to forgive themselves and move forward had generally built them up in their minds until they became 'unbearable'.
Everyone must decide for himself or herself what God can forgive. Generally, as illustrated by the forgiveness of the felon crucified with Jesus, it's said that anything, even a felony, can be forgiven for those who ask for forgiveness.
No matter how bad your sins or how frequent, Jesus came to save sinners. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you are saved. Here is the truth: The Lord Jesus Christ is God. Nobody can be good enough to avoid hell. The truth is that death leads to immediate heaven or hell, depending only on whether the person believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, or not. The truth is that the Lord Jesus Christ loves you and wants to bless your life freely :) Most of all, Jesus wants you with Him forever, and not in hell. It is too late to be saved, after death.

Believing on the Lord Jesus Christ means being forgiven all sins past and future and means going to heaven. The truth is that every belief except one will lead to eternal torment in the lake of fire for every person. Because nothing pays for our sins except the death and blood of Jesus, the sacrifice of Jesus that is already accomplished by Him . Jesus loves you! The truth is that the Lord Jesus Christ is God, and Jesus died on the cross to pay for all of our sins in full, and then Jesus was buried, and then Jesus resurrected from the dead. Nothing else pays for our sins, not works, not deeds, not religions. So the only way to heaven and to avoid hell, is by believing on Jesus for eternal life (John 6:47), without adding any of your own works (Romans 4:5). Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ to take you to heaven, and you will be in heaven, no matter what, guaranteed. That easy, thanks to Jesus! Tell Jesus that you thank Him that you will be with Him in heaven
Your sins are no better or worse than anyone else's. We are not sinners because we sin - (it's actually the other way around) - we sin because we are born sinners! Do you understand that? It's the sinful nature we inherited from Adam - I call it the Adamic sin nature which we are all born with which causes us to sin because that's inherent in us from birth and the Bible says we are born (spiritually) DEAD in trespasses and sins and only Christ can make us alive (Ephesians 2: 1 & 5). We are born cut off from God our heavenly Father, and He wants to reconcile us unto Himself - but He can only do this in Christ.
So believe me, we are all full of regrets for our past sins, but if we embrace Christ's forgiveness and receive Him as our Saviour, He WILL forgive us. The Bible says, "If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9).
That's why Jesus gave the Great Commission to the Christian Church because once we are saved, we need to tell others the good news of Christ's wonderful free gift of salvation and eternal life. He says it this way, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature in all nations, baptising those who believe, in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and teaching them to observe (that means obey) all things whatsoever I have commanded...." (Matthew 28:19 & 20)
When Jesus encountered a prostitute in the Bible, He didn't condemn her for what she had done, He forgave her because Christ never came into the world to condemn the world but that the world, through Him, might be saved (John 3:17).
When Jesus encountered the impotent man on his bed of sickness, Jesus didn't condemn him, but healed him and then said, "See you have been made well, go away and SIN NO MORE, lest a worse thing come upon you" (John 5:14).
Jesus is in the business of forgiving sins for those who are genuinely sorry and repentant. God said in times past, He overlooked ignorance, but "NOW COMMANDS ALL MEN EVERYWHERE TO REPENT" (Acts 17:30) because it's not God's will that anyone perish but that ALL should cone to repentance (2 Peter 3:9)
This is the good news of the gospel that although we are all sinners, God can save us and give us everlasting life with Him in heaven for eternity.
Just submit to Him. Ask Him to forgive you for all your past sins (Romans 3:25) and then invite Jesus Christ to come into your heart and save you - He is knocking at the door of your heart right now. Jesus said, "If anyone hears My voice and opens up the door, I will come into him and will sup with him and he with Me (Revelation 3:20).
I would recomment that you begin to read the New Testament, and start attending a good Bible-believing Church so that you can learn to pray and have fellowship with other Christian believers.
Don't forget that Jesus said, "There is more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety and nine who need no repentance" (Luke 15:7).
Christianity however, is not a one-time deal. It is a lifetime's relationship with God the Father through Jesus Christ - because we only have access to the Father through Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 2:18) and Jesus is the only way to the Father (John 14:6).
Peter told us to "Repent and be baptized every one of you, for the remission of your sins, in the Name of Jesus Christ and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit "(Acts 2:38), so once you have received Jesus into your heart, do not hesitate to be baptized as He commanded (Matthew 28: 19 & 20) so that you can 'die' and be 'buried' with Christ by baptism into death (Romans 6: 3 & 4) because then, your old man - that's the old Adamic sin nature I was telling you about at the beginning - will be crucified with Christ, so that you are no longer a slave of sin (Romans 6:6) - now isn't that great news?
"..he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart.."
Acts 13:22

For innumerable evils have surrounded me: my iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of my head: therefore my heart fails me.
Psalm 40:12
Psalm 38:4 4For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.
Psalm 25:17The troubles of my heart are enlarged: O bring thou me out of my distresses.
YES YHVH GOD IS IN THE BUSINESS OF FORGIVING SINNERS LIKE US.
Absolutely, I've been struggling to come to grips with the shame of my youth but it's getting better as I grow in the Lord. We have to give our filthiest bits to God to clean.
Wake up: there are no gods. Be happy 🙂
