If the amount of trust I stand to lose is important to me, I would not slip up at all. I've had very few situations where I was concerned about losing significant trust.
Be nice to them, offer to help them with things, make sure that i'm always there for them and apologize like a hundred times. It's not the same as suckin up.

If you let them know that you care about your mistake and honestly feel sorry for making it, then the person should regain their trust in you.
