It's because most of spanish-speaking people says that "x" should sound like "ks" ALWAYS, and not accept that the names of Mexico itself is from nahuatl, they only consider pronounciation. I'm from Mexico and I tell you, most of mexicans dislike to see "Méjico", so I advise you to write "México". =)
I believe they dont try to improve things in their own country because the United States and Mexico make it easier for them to cross the border to the US. If we closed the border the pressure would build to make reforms and end corruption in Mexico. Mexico has an abundant amount of resources but the way things are now this will not benefit their people until they take charge of their own government.
I don't know why, but when I write the word Mexico in Spanish, and when I use the spell corrector and yahoo misspell it and miscorrect it wrong, I just ignore it and write correct again with X.

¡Que viva México!
In Mexico it is written "México" not "Mejico". I dont care how other countries spell it, the Mexicans should decide how it should be spelled.

mexico is a nahuatl word; however, it is procounced meshico. there is also the word mexicatl for a mexican person.
