I am simply wondering. English is the official language of the World Cup and all the other countries are being called by the English forms of their names. Why should Côte d’Ivoire be different from the rest?

The Ivorian Government has decided in 1987 that the official name of the country, whatever the language used, should be "Cote d'Ivoire" in French. However, precisely the World Cup commentators do not observe this, so I hearde "Costa de Marfil" (Spanish), "Costa do Marfim" (Portuguese), "Costa d'Avorio" (Italian), "Coasta de Fildes" (Romanian) etc. a lot. I think only olfficial institutions, such as FIFA, are bound to use the official name, as defined by the relevant Governmnent. PS Coe d'Ivoire is no longer a French colony, but independent since 1960!

Why is the Ivory Coast called Côte d’Ivoire in football?

The Ivorian government officially discourages the usage of 'The Ivory Coast'.
Cote d'Ivoire is the official name for the country.
They speak French there, and the government discourages the use of the English equivalent, Ivory Coast.
Cote d'Ivoire is the official name of the Ivory Coast. It is an independent state but was at one time a French Colony.
Because their national language is French & Côte d’Ivoire is French for Ivory Coast.
So why doesn't everyone call Germany Deutschland regardless of the language that one speak's? Why do the French call England Angleterre and the US Les Etats Unis? Shouldn't we all be consistent on this and use your own local language for all countries, or always use the country's native language name?
I was wondering the exact same thing earlier, well now i know. My next question would be, why do they discourage it and not allow organisations like FIFA to write it in English? (these dodgy countries, i wonder)

I think (though I may be wrong) that Ivory Coast is a French colony, so it would be called by its French name... Hmmm
Their first language, like a lot of countries in Africa is French.
