The main obstacles ahead of Turkey are economical problems and improvement of civil rights of the citizens. Apart from that, there is nothing to hinder Turkey's membership (on paper).
In reality, some European leaders are still living in the Middle Ages. They constantly tell their people that Turks are Muslims (so what, nowhere in EU documents it says that EU is Christian); that Turks will flood into Europe looking for jobs (why would they when the economy improves?).
As Turkey gradually fulfills the official requirements for membership, they keep inventing new excuses, which are not part of the qualifications to become an EU member. They talk of silly things like the Armenian problem, the Cyprus problem, the Kurdish problem etc. etc.
For decades they have been exploiting the Armenian diaspora by seemingly supporting the notion of the so called genocide. They don't seem to remember the genocides executed by themselves (Africa, the Americas...)
They hide behind the pretext of Cyprus, closing their eyes to the fact that Turkey and Turkish Cypriots strongly favored the UN plan (Annan plan) for a reunification and peaceful solution of the problem, but Greek Cypriots, who refused it were admitted to the Union.
They (and the US) are using the Kurds with the hope of getting the oil in Northern Iraq, and the water resources of Turkey in its south-east. They don't care a bit about their economical, educational problems.
And no, I do not believe in a Turkic Union with our cousins in Central Asia. Turkey's future lies in the western values, in the virtues of western philosophy, not in the hypocrisy of its political leaders.
Some day soon, Turkey will be ready for membership, but may decide to reject it. Enough is enough. Just like every nation, every people (maybe even more), Turks have a national pride and honor. No one can keep on playing with that for long.
The end? Well, I guess Europe will regret it, nor Turkey.
But EU needs a 70 million people market. EU politicians are not brave enough to say that EU is a Christians' club.
Furthermore EU membership will be all the time on the table for discussion. It will be used by
1. Turkish politicians, to fool the people and to cover their failure
2. European politicians, to get what they want from Turkey
3. US politicians, to get what they want from Turkey by using UK support
But Turkish people already aware that EU membership is a never ending story and none of the privilages that were given to prior candidate countries were given to Turkey.
If I was a European citizen, I would be praying that Turkey will never have a clever, successful government. If somehow Turkey decreases the costs of production, more of the European production facilities will move to Turkey. Because Turkey is nearer than far-east (transportation costs), time difference is 2 hours, culture is more similar than far-east, people are younger than Europe.
One reason is because Turkey will not recgonize the "genocide" of Armenians. I am not sure if it was really a genocide anyway... but maybe they should just try to find some middle ground by saying that yes, there was a genocide of Armenians... but also there was a genocide of Turks from the Armenians. This way things are equal for Turkey and Armenia and also Turkey can join the EU.
Just like before, EU politicians are using the name "Turkey" as a threat to put an end to internal struggles and unite the peoples of Europe. It didn't work before, it won't work now.
Turkey would be an opportunity for EU, but the project seems to be stuck for now.
No matter what conclusion you come to. It all comes down to turkey being a Muslim country with 95% muslims. And remember Turkey is a neighbouring country of Iraq Iran sirya. And these countries are on Americas most wanted. It would also cause a lot of problems in the immigration system.
i don't see it coming apart of the E.U until islam is wiped out of the face of the country.
another aspect is that, you know, since the time 10 (mostly eastern block) countries were admitted to the eu, th eu has not been in a very good state, financially and most of its leaders believe that they may not be able to afford Turkey to join the EU. not to mention the impact Turkey will create in the European Parliament. the EU wants to regain its former powerful stance in international conflicts and not break up into a silly supranational union as a result of lack of financial means and so-called "instability" in several eu-affiliated organisation such as the European Parliament.
No, i think Turkey wont make it because, they still occupy 37% of Cyprus, they never recognized the Armenian genocide, they threat their neighbor countries, and they dont respect human rights.........Even if these things change, Turkey will not be able to join Europe because, EU dont want them to be part of it, cause they are 60.000.000 and Europeans about 700.000.000.....
That will change the whole Europe.....No one wants that......

and the Greeks say that they have no problem with the Turks. Just see Nikos ' s answer.
Turkey will never be accepted to the EU because of Europes Double faced Policies.
Turkey will never be accepted to the EU because they are afraid of the Turks and our YOUNG population since europe is getting old.
and because they hate us soooooooooo much
EU will join the Turkey.
I think one day we'll be part of the EU, when people would put their hatred and differences aside...but not now. World leaders are too immature.
