Why can't x³+1 be factored?

Can someone please explain to me why x³+1 cannot be factored? Why wouldn't it be:

x³+1=

x³+1³=

(x+1)(x²-x+1)

My math book says it cannot be factored, and I just don't understand why.

Thanks!
