Jazz is popular throughout the world. One might think that every country claims to have created it. But jazz is American. Jazz has much to do with insistence upon freedom. It evolved, as much American art has evolved, from the everyday life of the people. It evolved far from music conservatories, institutions, or the great tradition of music history. It evolved from many different types of people and popular music. It arose out of churches and fields as well as brothels and bars. But mainly it came out of the brothels. These were the houses of prostitution where, in the early years of this century, African-American musicians could get work. They were free to weave whatever musical spells suited them so long as the paying customers stayed happy.
