Thought I could still share something useful not only to Sweet Judy but to others who are also looking/asking the same:
There are actually quite a number of stores online that carry quality plates at low prices these days. You can find contemporary designs, classic looking ones, and even unique ones on these sites. You can opt to buy sets, or mix and match individual pieces, if you want a rather distinctive looking set.
To get good looking plates that are not that expensive, you should try to compare prices on different stores to see which one has the lowest price. Some sites do sell the same kind of plates for lower than others, so it might be a good idea to spend some time finding these.
You can also take advantage of the free shipping some websites have, which can also lower the cost of the plates that you choose to buy. While there are similar plates to be found in stores near you, more-often-than-not, these are costlier than what you can get online, and you have to exert effort to go to the store to get these. With online stores, you simply have to wait for these to be delivered to your doorstep. You can also transfer to another outlet online if you cannot find what you need or want on the site you are checking.
Go to yard sales, Second hand stores, and flea markets. Things from estates can usually be found there for real cheap. I have a china set that is set up for 12, got it for $20 and found it was worth $1500. Check them out.
It is associated with informal tableware and is both attractive and comparatively inexpensive. Dinnerware can be fired several times, depending on the decoration
I suggest Corelle dishes. They sell them on Amazon and Target. They're shatterproof, which is great if you have kids and pets. Even if you don't have kids its just good to have something that is break proof. In my opinion, they're affordable and attractive. There's also a German company called Waechtersbach and they sell attractive dishes. A little bit more expensive than Corelle but not too much.

You can browse at Amazon.com for more choices. Good luck.
Wal-Mart might have Corelle. It's not very expensive and looks somewhat elegant.
