Apparently I need a new US Federal ID in order to board a flight leaving the country. Isn't that why we have Passports for?
Update:Ah, so I misunderstood it. This is a measure to regulate the traffic of Legal Citizens when they fly to another State not another country. Thanks for the clarification everyone. This question is answered but Yahoo isn't allowing me to close it for some reason.

All it is, is an enhancement to state driver licenses. It's just a security validation showing those license holders have passed additional federal security checks when the license was issued.
Not leaving the country it is for travel within thes usa i believe. It is so you do not need your passport. You still need your passport to travel anywhere outside the country.
A passport is sufficient ID for boarding a flight out of the US. Make sure that your Visa for the destination country is in order, as that might stop you from getting on the plane.
It's not a "Federal ID" per se', it's an enhanced ID. State-issued IDs need to conform to stricter standards for the purposes of boarding a plane. I believe our state offers a driver's license that is not enhanced if you have no intention of boarding a plane.
It's done in response to so many states issuing drivers licenses and state IDs to illegal aliens .
Those of us that are not illegal aliens must get a " Real ID " to prove we are legal citizens .
Unless there's something new I haven't heard about, passports still work for any domestic or international flights.
The Federal ID law I think you are referring to is the enhanced state ID requirements. Here in California, it's called "Real ID." Coming up in October, that is what you will need to get on a domestic flight.
