My fiancé is graduating from law school at the end of the month, and I am at a loss for what to get him. He is not your typical lawyer who would enjoy having desk accessories with his name engraved on them...he rolls his eyes at "fancy" things and wears work boots every day (of course he dresses up for work, but only because he has to).
I have already purchased a leather briefcase for him as a birthday gift last year, so that's out.
He is doing a clerkship and not working at a law firm right away, so something for his clerkship would be nice, but I have no idea what he might need there.
He already has the "Passing the Bar" board game.
And the billable hour desk clock I considered getting him is out of stock.
Help???

Well, since he is done with law school and you got him a nice case already, why not get him something that has nothing to do with law? If he will be a rich lawyer someday, I would get him a memorable experience that he can look back on when he is insanely busy.
If he is a casual sort of person, maybe he'd like to do something outdoorsy? Have you thought of getting him skiing lessons? Or taking an unusual long weekend road trip that he will remember? For example, you could drive to the Appalachians to hear a bluegrass concert. Or if that is too expensive, you could get him a kayaking lesson or some other cool experience closer to home?
The leather briefcase is a great thing to carry into court, but there are some really fabulous bags he might want to use to carry everything on his daily commute. I'm talking specifically about bags that have a laptop sleeve and can be worn either over the shoulder or as a backpack. This type of bag would have enough space for his lunch and gym clothes and a newspaper too.
The only thing is sometimes people have very personal preferences about bags, so I'd suggest buying it someplace he could return it.
Not my most creative suggestion ever, but very practical.
Best of luck.
It depends on whether he has given you a ring yet. If so, a fancy clock or an expensive watch. If not, throw him a party and have everyone give him gifts. But don't invite any younger or more attractive women.
Check out Sharper Image, they have everything that would be perfect and unique for him.
