I need a new one after the glorious people at british airways lost mine. (yes i should have taken it in hand luggage, but i'm essentially a very lazy person).
Must be: fast and reliable.
thanks, chris

You can get pretty much any good laptop at that price. However, I can recommend some good ones, and warn about bad brands.
DO NOT GET:
Acer
HP
Compaq
eMachines
Good Brands:
Gateway
Toshiba
Mac
Dell
Sony
Asus
Or, you could build one if you know enough about computers.
For a specific one, I couldn't say exactly. Macs are great for graphic design, video and picture editing.
The rest, it all depends on which model you get. Here is a certain model that looks good from each brand. Hope this helps!!!
If you can go a little higher (US$1,450 - maybe £820?), look at the Gateway 7811FX. I've been in the business for a long time, so it takes a lot to impress me, but this laptop overwhelms me. Power, graphics (nVidia 9800M), upgradeability, price ...
It's large (and a bit heavy) if you're going to lug it around by hand (get a wheeled case), but it's all you need for both a laptop and a desktop. (My wife's works fine as a web server while she's playing World of Warcraft, talking on Skype and watching TV. I'm drooling, but I recently bought a 6860FX, so ...)
What are you planning on doing with said laptop?
Gaming - Dell, Lenovo, Alienware
Graphic Design - Mac
Programming - Dell, Mac, Lenovo, Sony
Don't buy HP anything. they are junk. Compaq is decent for general purpose, but doesn't have the muscle needed for the above processes.
Buy wahtever you want, but the ones I listed above are good for what I've listed them as.
Acer aspire 6920g is a great laptop for the money you pay.
