That depends on if you are talking middle school, high school? or college. I would say that most middle schoolers are looking for more fun, to make more friends, and to not do much work. So for middle schoolers I would probably focus more on activity/project based learning exercises which would get them into small groups of potential new friends, something to keep them entertained and get them learning all while not seeming like it.
High school is a bit more of a challenge because everyone wants their own life now. A car, a job, to impress a certain girl/boy. At this point school feels like actual work. Therefore I would say most high school students are looking for encouragement and motivation to succeed (whether or not they consciously know it) perhaps explain why they are learning what they are learning so they don't feel like its wasting their precious time.
College students are easier. They already know what they are going for. All I would do there is make sure thy are as prepared as possible for their career.
