Because greenhouse gasses have been rising at a sharp and /steady/ pace since industrialization. If it were volcanoes or some other sort of non-anthropogenic source, it would have begun much earlier, and would not be going so steadily, nor so quickly. We also know for a fact what we're doing can cause these problems, or at least worsen them.
Richard, that may be true when applied to only CO2, but did you happen to know that half of the sulfur and nitrogen based compounds (proven to cause acid rain) that are currently in our atmosphere are anthropogenic?
While mans activities are not the only cause of global warming they are significant. This is due to the release of CO2 into the atmosphere and the cutting down of trees. Since the industrial revolution the CO2 level in the atmosphere has risen from, I believe, about 240 part per million to 330 parts per million.
All of these answers are wrong! Man has NOT significantly impacted the atmosphere. CO2 does not significantly impact global temperatures since it makes up only 4% of the "greenhouse gases" and of that only 3% is manmade. So if you look at it from that angle man only is increasing greenhouse gases by a meager 0.12%. Considering the variances in nature this amount is hardly significant. The only "proof" are computer models which cannot replicate history. Not very much evidence don't you think???
There was no evidence of global warming as we see it today until the Industrial Revolution and the quantities of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere suddenly increased.
