You know, you ask a pregnant woman/parent what gender they want and all they can say is. "just as long as it's healthy!" It's like they're scared that if they say what they want, but don't get it, that people will think that they won't love the baby. I wouldn't think that. Or if they say, "just as long as it's healthy! But if I had to pick I would want..." As if they are automatically programmed to chant that whenever someone asks them. Why can't people just say what they want without feeling like they have to be SO secretive about it? It's actually kind of a mean statement, if you think about it. I mean, so what if it's NOT healthy, would you still want it?
P.S. Of course, I realize that there are people out there that genuinely DO NOT care either way. If that's the case, then fine. (but that's usually not the case) =)
Update:Lauren and Chikis: Yes, I have been pregnant and yes, I do have children.
Lauren: When did I say that gender was more important then health. Huh?

for me I dont know what I am having, and I am hoping for a boy, although it doesnt mean I will love it any less if it is a girl. I had hoped for a girl at first, but something told me it's a boy and even my boy name just "came to me" at the time I got that feeling...weird. Hopsitals here wont tell you what you are having, and I tell people i wish I knew because I feel so strongly it is a boy, I dont want to be "shocked" after the delivery if it is a girl...lol You know, being so certain all along its a boy then it isnt.. Overall it would really make no diference, but people say to me "what does it matter as long as it's healthy". Kind of the opposite situation than in your question, but it really annoys me. Some people want to know, some people hope for one or the other. I dont like having to call my baby "it", so I have been calling it him, lol. It isnt a big issue but it is my baby and I wish people would stop saying that to me and giving me advice that i never asked for.
Some people honestly don't have a preference. And maybe some people have had miscarriages or a baby with a birth defect and all they want is a healthy baby.
Maybe saying "as long as it's healthy" is just a nice way of saying "I don't really care"
Have you been pregnant?
when you are (pregnant) and not everything is happiness, when you have fears, doubts, when you have to call your doctor because you feel that something bad is going on, when you have been in pain that does not feel right or if you fall, your doctor is having a hard time finding the heartbeat, that's when you say: as long as it's healthy nothing else matters. I don;t see myself having a girl because I'm the only girl in my family and hubby wants a girl but whatever we have it will be amazing because it's a tiny person that it's half myself and half my hubby's.
You must not have children. Normally, you don't care, you may have a slight preference but you really don't care and all you care about IS the baby being healthy. If you care more about gender than health than you probably shouldn't be a parent. But honestly, most people DO NOT CARE.
When I was pregnant and someone asked me what I wanted, my reply was always 'I don't care, but I would like it to be health' That did not mean that if it was unhealthy I would not still love it and want it, it just meant that I 'would like' it to be healthy. I NEVER said 'just as long as it's healthy'.
It's often because of family gossip. They don't want it getting back to the child that they had hoped for a girl and gotten a boy.
However, it's less of a problem today. So many women choose boy names for daughters, it's pretty clear that they wanted a boy. Who otherwise would name a girl Taylor?
i say 'just as long as its healthy' because its a nicer way of saying i dont care. if someone says 'do you want a boy or girl', it doent sound right to say i dont care. so i say 'as long as its healthy'. of course even if its unhealthy im still going to love it. however, im not going to say 'as long as its unhealthy!'
lol. i really didnt care. i dreaded it when people would ask me this and i would respond "i dont care as long as its healthy" because i just knew they were thinking what you did!! lol.
