Ephesians 4:32–5:2

KINDNESS. Compassion. Forgiveness. Love. Sadly, it is rare to see people displaying such virtues today. What about you? Have you ever felt that your efforts to cultivate noble attributes are doomed to failure? A self-critical heart may insist that certain obstacles, such as ingrained bad habits or painful experiences from the past, make it impossible for you to develop appealing traits. Yet, the Bible teaches this reassuring truth—our Creator knows that we have within us the potential for cultivating positive qualities.

God’s Word admonishes true Christians: “Therefore, become imitators of God, as beloved children.” (Ephesians 5:1) Those words are a remarkable expression of God’s confidence in his worshippers. How so? Jehovah God created man in His image, according to His likeness. (Genesis 1:26, 27) God thus endowed humans with qualities that mirror his own. Hence, when the Bible urges Christians to “become imitators of God,” it is as if Jehovah himself were saying to them: ‘I believe in you. I know that despite your imperfections, you have the ability to be like me to a certain extent.’

What are some qualities of God that we can imitate? The surrounding verses answer. Note that Paul prefaced the admonition to imitate God with the word “therefore.” This term is a connection to the preceding verse, which mentions kindness, tender compassion, and forgiveness. (Ephesians 4:32; 5:1) Then, in the verse following the counsel to imitate God, Paul tells Christians to pursue a way of life characterized by unselfish love. (Ephesians 5:2) Truly, when it comes to displaying kindness, expressing warmhearted compassion, forgiving others freely, and showing love, we have the greatest example of all to imitate—Jehovah God.

Why should we want to be like God? Notice the powerful motivation inherent in Paul’s words: “Become imitators of God, as beloved children.” Is that not a touching thought? Jehovah views his worshippers as children whom he dearly loves. As a little boy may try to be just like his father, so true Christians try their best to be like their heavenly Father.

Jehovah does not force humans to imitate him. On the contrary, he has dignified us with free will. So whether you will become an imitator of God or not is up to you. (Deuteronomy 30:19, 20) Never forget, though, that you have within you the potential for displaying godlike qualities. Of course, to imitate God you must first know what he is like. The Bible can help you to learn all about the qualities and ways of the God whose matchless personality has drawn millions to become imitators of him.

Colossians 3:9, 10 indicates that being made in God’s image has to do with personality traits. Those who want to please God are urged to clothe themselves “with the new personality,” which is “made new according to the image of the One [God] who created it.”

Well when God said he created man in his own image it did not mean that man looks like God, who's name is Jehovah. NO, this would not be possible for God is a spirit creature. what is meant by this is our attributes are the same. i.e. love, kindness, peacefulness etc Jehovah placed in Man the things which are the inner man which mirror the traits of God.

It is not a physical thing, but He created Man/Woman with the capacity to be kind, loving, caring, everything that God is, but all powerful and capable of creation! yes, we are still capable of these things but often choose not to be like this, reject his Gifts and even when we can be all these things, our kindness, loving, caring etc are imperfect!

Man lost that potential when Adam and Eve sinned, and for thousands of years God made many rules and regulations (all of them practical and sensible - for example the food laws - without refridgeration pork goes off incredibly quickly, and the lifestyle of the pig was dirty, so therefore it was dangerous to eat! Hence the no pork law.

Then He sent Jesus, who as it was prophesied several thousand years earlier in Isiaiah, was no great beauty or remarkable in physical appearance, but eminated the Holy Spirit of God by his whole demeanor, actions, compassion, teaching.....

Since you ask about racism, yes, some people can and have interpeted it to mean that God is white (like the Jews), and that darker-skinned races came later.

There is a reference in the Bible somewhere about the origin of the African peoples, and how they were cursed to be servants of the others. The European colonials used this passage to justify the enslavement of blacks in the plantations of the Americas.

God did create man according to His image, remember as the nations grew, people dispersed, like us here in Africa, up in the North, the people there are very Dark skinned, and it gets better as you move more to the South or more to the North towards Europe, Climate contributed to some of our skin colour, but also when read on Moses you find that he was a dark skinned person. so somethings also are a result of sin.

Before that He created animals, we are told, they are not in his image, man is set apart from the animals and of a different order, in Gods image, and capable of a relationship with Him and knowing Him.

Color of skin and bodily differences of humans are irrelavent, they are made in his image.

We were created as natural beings with three parts; body, mind and spirit. Regardless of race, all of God's children are body, mind and spirit.Christ himself attained perfection with all the characteristics of God, but we fall short of God's standard. Praise be to Him for coming down and offering redemption for all. His plan is the greatest of all plans. And in His glory, we shall be glorified ourselves in eternity.

GOD made man in his image, mean he made man in his spirtial image not his physical image.In other words he made man to believe and have faith in him, without ever actually seeing him.
