What does "アテルイとモレ" mean?
Hello, I am doing some reading and can not find the meaning for these two words in the dictionary. Unfortunatly, katakana word's are not always obvious. :) Any help appreciated. I included the passage they came from for reference.
その後801年、坂上田村麻呂を征夷大将軍とする３度目の遠征が行なわれます。田村麻呂は胆沢地域の蝦夷を制圧し、胆沢に支配の拠点となる城を築きました。こうした動きに、蝦夷を率いてきたアテルイとモレは、遂に降伏を決意します。

"アテルイ" and "モレ" are both the names of the leaders of "蝦夷," who are natives of what is now called the Tohoku Region.
Usually, the names of Japanese people, now or ealier times, are written in kanji.
These names, however, are written in katakana, partly because the kanji for "アテルイ"
(阿弖流爲) is so complicated and the kanji for "モレ" (母礼) is hard to read.
And another reason is that their histories aren't obvious and they are a kind of hero.
Anyway, they are people's names, and it is no wonder you don't understand their meanings.
And such names are very uncommon.
