Square up both sides

8 - 2x = x^2

x^2 + 2x - 8 = 0

x^2 + 4x - 2x - 8 = 0

x(x+4) - 2 (x+4) = 0

(x+4) (x-2) = 0

When x+4 = 0, x = - 4

When x-2 = 0, x = 2

√8 - 2x = x

√8 = x+2x

√8 = 3x

x = √8/3

x = 2√2/3

x^2 -2x + 4x - 8 = 0

:. x = 2 and -4

the answer can only be 2. -4 doesnt work because you end up with 4= -4. when x=2 you end up with (square root of 4)=2
