"Habiter/vivre Paris" ou "habiter/vivre à Paris"?
I was reading "Un papillon dans la cité," a French novel, and the narrator wrote something along the lines of, "J'habitais Paris" or "je vis Paris." However, I thought that you always had to use a preposition such as "à" or "dans" after the verb habiter. Can a French speaker help me with this?

It is correctly like this
J'havite/je vis à Paris. À because it is a city's name
However. when you say "dans la cité" it no longer means "at/in the city" it is 'INSIDE the city' like the papillon (butterfly) roams around and inside the city
If you say "J'habitais Paris" it;s not quote on quote right, but if gives the sense that "I INHABITED Paris" as opposed to "I lived in Paris"

"je vis Paris" and "je vis à Paris" have 2 differents senses.
I think, it's like "i live in london" and "i live london".
I was taught to say things like "J'habite a Sydney" (I live there) so, this confuses me as well. o.o~
