My mom choked while eating and ever since she go to the ER until today she hasn’t woken up. My mom has been in the ICU, unconscious and on a ventilator for 6 days. Today the doctor told us she has gotten worse, in which she stopped breathing on her own completely. They say is down in an office and told us that she isn’t gonna wake up. They told us we have 2 options...
1: Either to pull the plugs and let her go naturally
OR
2: To have a tracheostomy inserted
We were told that either way we choose my mom will not wake up. Please help I would like some advice... how will my mom do on the tracheostomy and how long can she fight for her life??

What an awful situation to be in. A tracheostomy can give you a little more time to make a decision. You can decide to pull the plug after tracheostomy, but a tracheostomy is not an option if you pull the plug first. Seeking more time allows you to get more information so you can be comfortable with whatever you decide to do. Continue to talk with the doctors and don;t let them pressure you into something you might regret.
It would be torture to keep her body functioning artificially. She cannot feel or experience anything. If you and your family decide to keep her body functioning, it can be done, but this could continue for thirty or forty years. You will be left looking at a shell that needs a lot of maintenance.
If she is brain dead or in a vegetative state, pull the plug. If she is in a coma she could wake up. Do the trach. What term did he use? It all depends on what condition he says she has.
about 10 yrs ago i made my will and filled out a do not resititate order........everyone should decide for times like this
I wouldn't pull plugs on my mother. Her soul is still here.
