What about when it’s the other person making it weird? Like, I wanna be known as socially adept and even graceful. But sometimes, even when I’m at the top of my game, some other dumb Fool ruins everything (like people do).
One recent example:
Some dude I’ve just met, in a small crowd of people I’ve also just met, brays out: WHAT’S YOUR PASSION?? with full-on Bill Burr-esque inflection.
Now, maybe this is meant to be better than the very American social sorting hat of, “What do you do?*” But it’s pretty personal, too broad, and too annoying. All I want to know is, if I answer loudly, “HARDCORE PORN! I’M GLAD YOU ASKED!” I’m good, right?

A little bit of blather "ruins everything"? That's the sort of thinking you need to overcome. If you want to be known as socially adept and graceful, you have to keep your poise (which is really just another word for balance) and let other people's goofiness be their problem. In this particular case, I suggest you claim anything you're comfortable talking about as your "passion". That's the advantage of questions that are "too broad": you're free to interpret them any way you want.
theyre just trying to start a conversation, you could just say youd rather talk about sonnething else
that's how i know your mom
Depends on the person's motives. If they're just trying to be nice or make conversation, then I wouldn't give an obnoxious answer. If they're doing it to annoy me, I'd think of something
