My partner earns £900/month and i work part time earning about £400/month, i thought this was fantastic to be able to get a mortgage, but my nan thinks it isnt nearly enough. What do you guys think? Would me and my partner be struggling? I know there are bills and that to pay, but i personally think we would be ok, what do you think?

Hi Kim,
Honestly, probably not, sorry. In simple terms think of it this way - to get a decent mortgage these days you will need at minimum a 10% deposit, better 20%, and you are likely to be able to borrow no more than 3 times your income. Your combined income is just under 16k, so you might be able to borrow 48k, and a 10% deposit on top of that would mean a property selling for under 55k. Unless you're in a very unusal part of the country that's not going to get you close to anything at all, let alone anything that would make a good buy for a couple with no additional money to invest in fixing it up. Sorry to be a party pooper but we've all been there - at the moment you would be best advised to rent or, depending on your circumstances, live with your folks, and concentrate on a) saving and b) getting into a position where you can earn a bit more. Good luck! :)
your going to fail horribly and struggle if you move in together.
Mortgage usually runs 800 that's 500 left
say 400 goes towards bills that's 50 between the both of you
just think to your self, what can u do with 50 freakin dollars
Too many variables to give an real answer,. It would depend on what size of mortgage (100K , 200K etc), what percentage you managed to put down and what kind repayment or interest only etc.
My mortgage is relatively small, 50K, but it still costs 550/month. Then you have utilities, council tax, food etc etc. It all adds up!
it really depends on the size of the mortgage you're after. Do you have a good deposit saved up? Typically you will need 15-20% to get anywhere near a good rate.
