I wouldn't write her/him a letter. Just walk up to them, and say, will you go bowling with me on Friday? or something like that. Go somewhere fun where you will get the chance to talk to them but have them to yourself. It will mean so much more to that person if you ask them in person. I tmay seem embarrasing, but the worst they can do is say no, right?
