If the sum of a number and two is tripled, the result is four less than twice the number. Find the number.
The sum of 29/6 and six times a number is equal to 7/6 subtracted from seven times the number. Find the number.
Could someone help me with these two questions?

First is 10, second is 5
First one: Call the number x.
Sum of a number and 2 = 2 + x
This gets tripled = 3 * (2 + x) = 6 + 3x
Four less than twice the number = 2x - 4
And we're told these are equal.
6 + 3x = 2x - 4
We need to isolate the x on one side of the equals sign, and a number on the other. We can do whatever we want to one side, as long as we do the exact same thing on the other side too. Let's start by subtracting 2x from each side.
6 + 3x - 2x = 2x - 2x - 4
6 + x = -4
Now subtract 6 from each side.
6 - 6 + x = -4 - 6
x = -10
Done.
Second one: call our number y
29/6 + 6 times a number = 29/6 + 6y
7/6 subtracted from 7 times the number = 7y - 7/6
And these are equal. So
29/6 + 6y = 7y - 7/6
Again, let's subtract 6y from each side.
29/6 + 6y - 6y = 7y - 6y - 7/6
29/6 = y - 7/6
Now add 7/6 to each side.
29/6 + 7/6 = y - 7/6 + 7/6
36/6 = y
6 = y
Done! Hope that helps :)
