what would ‚Homo eucranus‘ translate to ? It’s a mixture of greek and latin and was a proposed designation for recent humans. My guess would be ‚man with the beautiful skull‘. Is that right ?

I would be more likely to think it meant 'man with the dodgy grasp of classical languages'.
However, I think your understanding of it is correct. The prefix 'eu' often means 'good' or 'well', so I suppose it means something like well-skulled man or ' good-headed man'.
