Sometimes it makes them go away. Some people only like negative
attention. It`s what gets them up in the morning. Instead of saying, What nice thing can I do for someone today? They say, Who can I crap on today? And they spend their day looking for that person. It`s called stalking. I used to work undercover to catch these dirtbags. There are alot of them out there.

Why first. Because the greatest moral principle is love your neighbor (even if that neighbor is your enemy) as yourself.
How finally. This person need not be your friend, nor do you need to spend time with them. Rather, you can be civil to them, and even help them if they need help. It is a blessing to help those we do not like.
Matthew 5.44-48 "“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. “For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? “If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? “Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect."
Matthew 5:46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? 47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? 48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Being kind is the right thing to do. It is immature to be mean to someone just because you don't really like them.
Grow up and be kind.
As a Christian I am mandated to love my enemies do good to those that despise me and use me etc.
As for the pyschology behind being nice to others you may not like the experience may release within you the love for them.
